What is Sisterlocks®?
Sisterlocks® is a lifestyle NOT a hairstyle.
Sisterlocks® is one of the most beautiful styles for natural hair. Aside from it’s beauty, Sisterlocks is incredibly versatile since you can roller set, colour, braid, or wear them wild and free.
They even make for an ideal transition style if you’re ready to say goodbye to your relaxer. Since the locking process begins at the root, you can gradually cut off any straight ends as your hair grows out.
The Origin of Sisterlocks®
Sisterlocks® were created and trademarked in 1993 by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell. In her own words on the Sisterlocks® official website, Cornwell’s mission says:

Consultation for Installation
- In person or online video consultations are available.
- During our session, we’ll ask about your hair history and see the condition, length and density of your hair.
- Then, we’ll tell you more about Sisterlocks® and the after-care process.
- Next, we’ll test your hair to determine what locking pattern works best with your hair curl pattern.
- Finally, we’ll measure your hair length and check your density in order to provide a quote for your installation.

Consultation
Consultation is non-refundable. Consultation can be done either online or in-person.
Installation
Installation fee deposit is non-refundable and non-transferrable (this fee will be determined at your consultation).
Cancellation
To reschedule or cancel your appointment, please notify us more than 48 hours prior to your appointment. Otherwise, you will pay the $50 no-show fee to reschedule.

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your appointment so you don’t go over your booked time and spend more money. If you arrive 15 minutes or more late, your appointment will be cancelled and you will pay $50 no-show fee to reschedule.

What is Sisterlocks®?
Sisterlocks® is a natural hair management system that creates tiny locks that you can style, allowing women with tightly or loosed textured hair to try different styles without altering the natural texture of your hair.
Sisterlocks® are natural, no extensions, no use of any heat or chemical products. Sisterlocks® are installed with no hair product on small sections of hair. Sisterlocks® are fairly low maintenance. You should sleep with a silk bonnet or pillowcase to prevent frizz.
Sisterlocks® are installed using a tool that starts the style at the end of your hair rather than the root, therefore minimizing damage to the hair follicle as there’s less pulling involved in the installation process.
What is Brotherlocks®?
Brotherlocks® are similar in style to Sisterlocks®, but they are for men, as their hair texture and density is different than women.
Can I get Sisterlocks® if I have relaxed hair?
Yes. Though the transition will take more time, our hair care professionals who are trained in Sisterlocks® techniques can help you make that transition. Your styling options will increase as your natural texture grows out.
Do I need to have ‘fine’ hair for Sisterlocks® to work?
Not at all! In fact, the coarse, thick ‘nappy’ hair is best for Sisterlocks®. Your natural abundant texture adds body and makes styling easier.
Does this mean that once I get Sisterlocks® I can still change hairstyles?
Yes! Sisterlocks® is a lot less limiting than extensions because it is your natural hair. You can curl it, braid it, wear a ponytail, cut it, spray or mousse it, wear banks and parts – you name it!
Can Sisterlocks® be taken out?
Yes, but the procedure is tedious that you will not want to get Sisterlocks® with that intention. Once you discover the range of freedom with Sisterlocks®, you won’t want to go back! Finally, there’s a way of celebrating the natural beauty of our hair with Sisterlocks®.
How long does it take to do Sisterlocks®?
The initial locking process takes about two thirds as long as getting extensions of comparable size. For medium length hair, this means about eight to twelve hours (or longer!). The beauty of Sisterlocks® is that tightening them as your hair grows out is extremely simply, since there are no extensions to remove and reset.
Can I do the locks myself?
This is not advised. Not all hair types require the same locking technique. Your hair care professional is the best trained to give you locks that will be best suited to you. Also, many hair care professionals are trained to give you cuts, styles and grooming tips that will ensure the lasting beauty of your locks. Once your Sisterlocks® are established, you can take a Retightening Class to learn how to maintain your own hair. This is great for when you travel, or when you have to miss an appointment, or if you just want to save money on long-term maintenance. Caution: we strongly recommend you see a Consultant 2-3 times a year to keep your Sisterlocks® looking beautiful.
Will Sisterlocks® cause my hair to break or thin?
Just the opposite! Sisterlocks® is a gentle technique that requires no chemicals, no excessive tightening, and causes no damaging abrasion to the hair or scalp. You’ll find that with regular care, your locks will grow and grow, and your styling options will increase.
What does it mean when the locks settle?
This means the locks will soon mature. In the beginning stages of your locks, the parting is very visible and there is chance of slippage (locks coming down) depending on the texture of your hair.
What products do I use on my Sisterlocks® or Brotherlocks®?
Once your locks are installed the only product you should use on your locks is the Sisterlocks® Starter shampoo. This shampoo is designed to help with the maturing/locking process of your locks. As part of your installation package you will and should receive a full wash 2 weeks after installation. As a client, you will receive a full wash and the Sisterlocks Starter kit that includes the Starter shampoo. It is imperative that you refrain from using other hair products, unless they’re prescribed by a physician. We want to avoid any issues with your locking process.
What about extensions? Can I use extensions for Sisterlocks®?
No. The Sisterlocks® process does not require the use of extensions to install Sisterlocks® or Brotherlocks®. As stated earlier, your natural hair is the only hair used in the installation process.
What about my hair type? Is it right for Sisterlocks®?
Our Sisterlocks® Consultants work with all hair types with a natural curl pattern. Those with fine or thin hair, no worries, your hair can be locked too. Those with fine hair typically takes longer to lock, but with your regularly scheduled maintenance (Sisterlocks® retightening), your locks will mature and lock as well.
Should I colour my hair before or after I get Sisterlocks®?
We recommend that you colour your hair before your initial Sisterlocks® installation.
